A late introduction into the Camaro engine lineup in 1967 was the RPO L78 option. The RPO L78 had been around for years before in both the corvette and the Chevelle but was never intended to be placed into the Camaro as it broke Chevrolets standing horsepower to weight ratio in place for all cars except Corvette. This rule seems to have been more of a soft guideline in retrospect as Chevrolet often broke that rule.
On March 17th, 1967 Chevrolet officially announced that the new option would be included as part of the SS lineup. The initial option as described in a letter to dealers dated March 17, 1967 was to include an open element air cleaner, larger carburetor, aluminum intake manifold, special camshaft, mechanical (Solid) lifters and a great deal more.
Although rated at 375hp the L78 engine was said by many to produce over 400hp from the factory. The great power and torque produced by the L78 was the driving force behind this becoming an extremely popular engine amongst racers for the length of its availability.
The L78 was only available for part of 1967, all of 1968 and 1969 and then was offered for a very short time in 1970 before being discontinued.
Total production for the RPO L78 option was-
